SHARING MY THOUGHTS
Prof. Aniruddha Kolhatkar

How to succeed in my studies?
Hello students, in today’s sharing my thoughts I would like to talk to you about one of the most important subject for you as a student and that is “How do I succeed in my studies”?
Now being successful means different things for different students. Some might feel that passing in the exams is success enough while others may want to be University toppers. It all depends on your motivation and objectives in life.
Even then I am sure that all of you want to succeed and be recognized as a person. That’s right, all of us want to be recognized. This is one of the most fundamental needs of man. Recognition by friends, peers, society in general gives us a sense of purpose and achievement in life. Recognition creates positive attitudes and acts as a fuel for further achievement. Indeed we measure our self-worth based on how we are perceived by others.
I personally feel that more than the self-worth given by society we should be more dependent on the self-worth given by ourselves. The word self-worth indicates that it is how we look at our own self that really determines how we feel. There is a constant inner dialogue which is going on in our heads which asks “How am I doing”?  The mood of a person depends on the answer to this question. In a way we can imagine our self, standing in front of the mirror and asking this question, and as in the story of the sleeping beauty the mirror never lies.
So today I would like to dwell on the question “how can I succeed in my studies”?
I would like to discuss a few pointers in this regard:
1.       Compete with yourself: Don’t try to compete with the world for there will always be somebody better than you. Try to become better than what you are. Accept the fact that there are people who can be smarter and more intelligent than you. Do not envy others who are better than you but try to appreciate them and try to take clues from their success for your own self-improvement.
2.       Get Organized: Remember that the rule of economics applies to your studies. There is more demand and less supply. That means time is limited and the subjects that you have to cover are many. The solution is to make more efficient use of your time. Remember the word efficiency. Efficiency means achieving more in less effort. So don’t waste your most valuable resource i.e. time. Make a time table and try to stick to it.
3.       Do one thing at a time: List down the things that you have to do. Give the most important thing in the list number 1 and then go down the list giving priority to the tasks like 2, 3, 4, and so on. Focus on the no.1 item on your list and complete it. Don’t think about the other items at that time. Remember that multi-tasking is bad. Plan for all the tasks but do one task at a time only.
4.       Learn to Focus: Indeed this is one of the most difficult things. This is a skill to be developed. You can practice meditation every day for 10 to 15 minutes to improve your ability to focus. Meditation means just sitting still and observing your breath. Slowly you will realize that your mind becomes steady and focused.  While doing your work, keep away all other distractions like your smart phone. Try to sit in a quiet place. If you develop this ability to focus on one task at a time you can achieve things faster and with better creativity.
5.       Learn to accept results as they are: You might have to face disspointments in your life.  Your teacher may not give you the grade that you feel that you deserved. You might fail in an exam. You might be criticized. Try to take everything in the spirit of acceptance. Ask yourself the question, did I do the best I could? If the answer is ‘yes’ just go ahead and keep on doing good work. If the answer is ‘no’, ‘I could have done better’, then try to improve. Remember that success and failure are a part and parcel of life. There is not a single person in this world who can claim that he has not failed. Failure should be treated as an opportunity. An opportunity to learn, to better yourself and grow.
